Junior Kelly

May 31, 2020

Today, Heart of a Champion proudly honours Junior Kelly as this week’s ‘Saturday Salute’. 🙂

Lewis Kelly, Jr., better known as Junior Kelly, started his racing career in 1963 on the dirt oval of Green Acres Raceway. He didn’t even have a drivers license and his first race car was a 1949 Chev # 13. 🙂

In 1979 he won both ends of the Twin 50s at Atlantic Speedway!
Junior was one of the drivers in the inaugural MASCAR event at Riverside International Speedway on May 22, 1983. 🙂

In 1984 Junior finished second in the MASCAR points championship and in 1985 he was the MASCAR point champion. 🙂

On May 29 1988, Junior was the big winner in front of a crowd of 4000, at Scotia Speedworld on its grand opening weekend!

Junior and his team added a touch of class to the Maritime stock car racing scene. He would show his car in several car shows to promote stock car racing and his sponsors. 🙂

Junior is a member of the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame, and sadly missed.

Junior, for all the years of dedication to Maritime motorsports, you raced and lived with the Heart of a Champion! 🙂 Photo/Info: MMHOF, Ken MacIsaac.
