Today, Heart of a Champion proudly salutes Dave Habkirk, as this week’s ‘Saturday Salute’ recipient! 🙂 Dave started racing in 1975, drag racing his street legal 1968 Camaro around the drag strips of Ontario! His love of speed turned quickly to the oval track where he began tearing-up the Ontario ovals like Pinecrest, Jukasa Speedway (Cayuga), Delaware and Flamboro! 🙂 Dave also made trips ‘down east’ to Riverside International Speedway (his favorite track) and Onslow Speedway, as well as trips to the States to run at Wiscasset Speedway and Unity! 🙂 Dave was a ‘true’ racer, known to be the ‘best’ at getting the most out of a little. Dave was a hard charger that looked after his gear with a simple motto: “To finish first, you first must finish”. Wise wisdom he passed along to fellow racers and his sons! Dave moved the family to New Brunswick in the late 80’s and settled very close to Petty Speedway where he soon kept his winning ways going strong! 🙂 Dave drove John Archibald’s Modified, Frank McCully’s Mini Stock along with his own Sportsman car. 🙂 Considering Dave rubbed fenders, over the years, with the likes of Donnie Allison, Don Biederman, Jr. Hanley, Bill Zardo, Fred Bullen, Frank Fraser, Terry Clattenburg and Greg Sewart, that experience led him to the Checkered flag on many occasion’s! 🙂 Sadly, Dave passed away in 2015 but his legacy will live on with his Sportsman car that his son continues to campaign around the Maritime bull rings! 🙂 Dave for all the years of dedication and passion to Maritime motorsports, you lived and raced with the Heart of a Champion. 🙂
