Today, Heart of a Champion’s ‘Saturday Salute’ is Ernie & Winona McLean! The McLean’s could easily be referred to as the ‘First Family of Maritime Stock Car Racing’ for their decades of support and dedication to the sport. Ernie fell in love with stock car racing in the late 50s when living in Ontario. Ernie also spent time behind the wheel in the early 60s! Ernie & Winona had a grand-vision to build and promote an elite racing facility on the east coast, which eventually was the creation of Riverglade Speedway in 1964! They also had a hand in other race tracks around the Maritime’s, helping to promote the sport. Most weekends in the late 60s consisted of traveling from Riverglade NB to Harve Boucher NS, a 5 hour one-way trip to promote both race tracks! Ernie was inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2000 and their living legacy is the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame 2016; their vision to preserve Maritime motorsports history. 🙂 Ernie & Winona, thank you from racing community for all you’ve done! You both have the Heart of a Champion. 🙂 Photo: MMHOF, HOAC
