Today, Heart of a Champion’s ‘Saturday Salute’ is Maritime motorsports builder, promoter and sponsor, Doug Lively! In the late ’60s, Doug and his partners built the Maritime’s first multi-use racing complex, in Upper Sackville Nova Scotia, called Drag City! The facility was ahead of its time and included a 1/3 mile semi-banked oval and the longest drag strip in Eastern Canada! The drag strip was so long, it’s been said that ‘Fuel Cars’ didn’t need a parachute to stop! 🙂 The facility had a seating capacity for 15,000 people and every seat had a great view! 🙂 Many drag racing and stock car ‘stars of the day’ raced at the facility including, Terry Clattenburg, Barry Paton, The Nickerson Brother’s, Jr. Hanley, Don Mahar, Linwood Giberson, Frank Fraser, Glen Walker, Skip Collier, Stan Brennan, and Jim Hallahan JUST to name a FEW!! 🙂 Doug brought in announcers like Dizzy Dean, Jerry ‘Jer Bear’ Lawrence, Ken Packham and promoters like Bob Brooks and Skip Mackenzie! 🙂 Doug always had the Intruders Car Club, on-hand, for track clean up and safety! Drag City drew the whos-who of Maritime drag racing and stock car racing every weekend! Although the facility changed names a few times over the years, it never lost its charm and allure to bring the big names to compete! Doug, thank you for the foresight to build such a beautiful facility, providing the backdrop for thousands of Maritime motorsport’s racing fans and competitors to make memories that will last a lifetime! 🙂 You had the Heart of a Champion. 🙂 Photos: Jerry Lawrence, Lively Family Archive, FB
